Audacity

Framed within two thin sheets of glass
a still life of the fearless one
posed like a stone sculpture
in a false pretense of self
masked in a genuine smile
that could fool the most cunning.

A hammer to stone
could crack the outer layer
revealing naked flesh and
bone filled with diseased marrow
exposed by decades of maltreatment.

Paint yourself with cement
to preserve the aesthetics
of your relentless audacity
for attention
while the hammer
rests in the artist’s hands
ready to swing.
